Water management matters as well. Proper grading, drainage, flashing, waterproofing, roof drainage, and careful detailing around openings can help prevent a severe rain event from becoming a major interior water-loss event.

The appropriate specifications depend on the home’s location, design, applicable building codes, local amendments, engineering requirements, and the level of resilience the homeowner wants to achieve.

A Safe Room Can Add Another Critical Level of Protection

One of the most important distinctions in storm-resistant home design is the difference between protecting the structure and protecting the occupants.

A stronger house can reduce vulnerability to many storm forces, but no conventional residence should be advertised as capable of guaranteeing survival of every tornado.
